Today is my nephew’s birthday. I can hardly believe that he is 4 years old. There are so many wonderful and colorful things I can say about “Reedy-Reid.” For starters, he teaches adults how to use THEIR smartphones and iPads. Can you believe he called me once to tell me that Michael Jackson was still the King of Pop?! I laughed so hard. That little boy is definitely one in a million.
One of the things I love most about Reid is that he knows NO FEAR. You know, fear is a learned behavior–meaning we have to be taught how to be afraid. I’m told that babies come into the world with only two fears: the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. These fears are merely used as a survival mechanism that help to avoid potential danger. Every fear outside of that comes from something we learned from another person (often parents or family) or an experience that triggers our mind and emotions to feel afraid. I think we all experience fear from time to time. Though it is a natural part of life, fear can be quite paralyzing if not controlled…better yet eliminated. I have always had the fear of public speaking until a few years ago. I found playing an instrument before tens of thousands of people much easier than speaking in front of a group of ten. I remember the day the fear was broken. It was the day I had no way of getting out of a speaking event (in a workshop setting). I will admit, I felt nausea and faint for many days leading up to the date but can I tell you…since that experience, I have been speaking on various topics ever since. Once you do what you’re afraid of, it can no longer have power over you.
One of my mantras is “no fear…only faith.” Every time I say it, I think of my nephew, Reid. When he sees something he wants to do, he jumps in head first. He keeps my sister on “high alert” watching and praying 🙂 but I so admire and love that quality about him. Maybe there is a fear you want to overcome. As a gift to yourself…and a birthday gift to my Reid, jump in head first. The thing you were afraid of most will no longer have power over you. Start living your best life today and experience the freedom you honestly deserve. HAPPY BIRTHDAY REEDY-REID! Aunt Stephie loves you!!
